Bítov Castle Loop

This area is probably pretty busy during the high season. Castle Bítov’s history goes back to the 11th century as one of the oldest castles in Moravia. The last owner George Haas, who had large collection of live animals in the castle was facing prospect of being expelled from Czechoslovakia after the second world war and rather than abandoning his beloved animals committed suicide…

Anyway, we were here before the season started, we could not visit the castle. Maybe next time…

Parking is conveniently available at the square in Bítov, wher you can also find an excellent restaurant “U Tesařů”. This ride is quite easy, any type of bike would be fine. The only part which you have to walk your bike is from 10 to 11, where you will be crossing quite narrow bridge. If you are following us, you know that we try to avoid regular roads, but in this case we could not avoid that. So from 13 to 16, you will be on asphalt with cars passing you quite fast – especially from 13 to 15. You may probably cut a piece of this stretch by going from 12 to 14 on the muddy path, but we did not confirm that choice. So, if you do that, let us know how did it go.

Make sure that you don’t miss the eagle statues in front of the tower Rumburak (just past the point 3), and a little ruin of Rotunda Heinrichsruhe at point 18. When you arrive back at the square where you started, you can continue on the road to point 20 to enjoy the view of Castle Bítov across the river, and to 21 to visit the ruins of Cornštejn Castle.
