We returned to this area because our last visit was really a memorable one. This is gorgeous landscape both on the surface and also underground. We had to visit another cave just to refresh our memories. And yes, there we met the creature on the title picture – vrápenec malý (lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros)), which is really small about 3 cm long weighing about 5 g.
As the starting point you can use many of parking lots at the entrances of the caves, but if you don’t want to be charged for parking you can start at the parking lot for two cars at the village Ostrov u Macochy. After a ride through the open fields to point 5, do not try to follow red mark downhill to 9, it is not rideable. And you would miss the chance to visit the abandoned quarry at point 8. At point 9 you have to make a major decission – either follow us through the very challenging and at parts not rideable 9 to 11, or use the regular road to Holštejn and return to point 13 to visit the cave lidomorna there and see a bunch of climbers to try their skills.
You should not miss the new church in Šošůvka at 15, which will probably remind you of Le Corbusier’s architecture. At 17 you may decide to visit the cave to see the bat from the title picture. After that you will ride very pleasant downhill Pustý žleb valley all the way to 19. At 21 you will look down to Macocha, 138 m deep gorge. From 23 you can just follow the regular road to the end of the trip, or you can ride the adrenaline path at the edge of a “cliff” 24 to 28. On the left side you will see the old wind mill, which was converted to the weekend house by a family from Brno.
